"For centuries, Danish architecture has shown a fine critical instinct and intelligent restraint in adapting foreign influences to the architecture of their own country. For this reason, Danish architecture, while receiving many refreshing stimuli from beyond the borders of Denmark, has developed, in a steady organic fashion, its own highly original character. Today, there is universal admiration for modern Danish architecture - its simple and disciplined architectural vocabulary, its practitioners' profound understanding of the nature of materials, and its superb craftsmanship - but these features are all part of a long heritage. Firmly established in their solid tradition of craftsmanship, the Danes, first in the half-timbered buildings of the middle ages and later in the brick structures of the Empire period developed their taste for simple organisation and harmonious proportion. Thus, the Danish preference for functional forms and appropriate materials was by no means just a result of the famous Stockholm Exhibition of 1930 - they were already part of the Danish tradition: outstanding examples, for instance, were the high-quality welfare housing units built in the 1920's. This is the background against which the Danish architectural historian Tobias Faber presents his analysis and evaluation of post war Danish architecture, from private houses to town planning. He shows various developments and their outstanding exponents - Kay Fisker and the traditional architectural orientation, Arne Jacobsen and the functional style that has contributed so much to the high reputation of Danish architecture today, and Jorn Utzon, designer of the controversial Sydney Opera House."--Jacket.
