This report describes a flow sheet for an alcohol fuels plant that produces 50 million gal/yr of ethanol from corn stover by high-temperature dilute acid hydrolysis. The process sequence includes steam explosion and ethanol solvent delignification, prehydrolysis and hydrolysis to convert the amorphous and crystalline cellulosic components to sugars, continuous fermentation, and distillation to recover pure ethanol. The flow sheet was not optimized, but was configured to include many potential process blocks. Estimates of capital and operating costs are prepared, and the selling price of ethanol is calculated.
