Nowadays urban Quebecers are known to be a "society of tenants." This sociological characteristic does not originate in the 20th century. As early as the first half of the eighteenth century, tenants became the majority (60%) in the city of Québec. Today this ratio is 70%. Then and up until recently, people moved on 1 May. Three words sum up the 18th-century urban society: mobility, competition and impoverishment. This is what stands out in the demographic, economic and material analysis of various socio-professional groups that composed this pre-industrial town.
