James Howley examines buildings, mainly from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, from all four provinces of Ireland, placing them in their architectural and historical contexts. He discusses the early eighteenth-century revolution in garden design, which led to the first tentative placing of garden-type pavilions in a natural landscape setting, and traces the social and philosophical ideas behind it. He also describes many of the individuals who inspired and created this movement, including such architects as Edward Lovett-Pearce. Thomas Wright, William Chambers, James 'Athenian' Stuart, and William 'Vitruvius' Morrison.
