The work of 18th century French architect Claude-Nicolas Ledoux has been subjected to multiple interpretations in the centuries following his death in 1806. Vidler argues that despite the idiosyncratic combination of geometrical purity, inventiveness and Enlightenment ideology which have made Ledoux a prototype for the modern, reformist architect, many of his apparent innovations in style and iconography can be traced to his deep respect for the tradition of French classicism, and a spirit of revival. Includes many photographs and plans.
