"The Bauhaus exhibition in Calcutta in 1922 was a unique event on the international art scene - an encounter between artistic and intellectual kindred spirits. Western modernism, which was seeking spiritual and artistic renewal after the first world war, met its Indian counterpart, which had emancipated itself from colonial constraints. In the first international appearance of the Bauhaus, works by Paul Klee, Lyonel Feininger, Johannes Itten, and other Bauhaus artists were presented alongside those by modern Indian artists such as Nandalal Bose, Sunayani Devi, Abanindranath Tagore, and Gaganendranath Tagore. This book recounts how the unusual encounter came about and presents the exhibition as an exemlpary case of art history, defined not by West-East transfer but by encounters, affinities, and shared visions."
