The SAAL Process exhibition discussed ten influential SAAL projects. This series contains several reproductions of seven of the projects documented in the exhibit. The projects were mainly in Porto, but also in Lisbon and Setúbal, Portugal. The reproductions included in this series cover the following projects: Bairro Quinta do Bacalhau–Monte Coxo, Lisbon; Leal, Porto; Antas, Porto; São Victor, Porto; Miragaia, Porto; Casal das Figueiras, Setúbal; and Quinta da Bela Flor, Lisbon. It includes 36 dwellings. - Curraleira–Embrechados, Lisbon: A project by José António Paradela and Luís Gravata Filipe with the participation of the residents' associations Cooperativa de Habitação Económica Bairro Horizonte and Cooperativa de Habitação Económica Lisboa Nova, in 1976. The first phase includes 768 dwellings and the second 170 dwellings. The collection contains reproductions of design development drawings, presentation panels and photographic materials dating from 1974 to 1979 that were realised during the SAAL Process. The material shows samples of built and unfinished housing projects in Portugal.

Project records document OCEAN North’s design for their competition entry for the Töölö Football Stadium in Helsinki in 1997. The project was titled Open Arena by OCEAN North. The site for the football stadium was in the Töölö neighbourhood and adjoining the Helsinki Olympic Stadium, located in a park area. OCEAN North’s entry was a building that would integrate with its natural surroundings while being able to accommodate a variety of activities and events. The structure has three topological surfaces that were devised through an iterative process: initial drawings made in Adobe Illustrator, modelling made with form*Z and manually transferred on Plexiglas sections, modifications made on the Plexiglas sections captured back into the CAD drawing, etc. At some point in the design process, the Channelling Systems approach was developed and used to analyze the structure’s dynamic relationship with its surroundings. Records show different stages of the design process and include at least one photograph of the Plexiglas sections referenced above. Digital files are grouped according to their function: Channelling Systems analysis, 2D graft spatial exploration, and plans and sections. There are also libraries of images and textures which may have been used for other drawings and models. Over half of the files are raster or vector images likely created by CAD software. This includes images of renderings. CAD drawings are in the native Microstation format, although one is in form*Z format. Textual records present the project and for the most part are the accompanying documentation for the competition entry, including legends for plans and sections. Timestamps for some of the digital files extend past the date of the competition. It is likely that these dates reflect when files were transferred to the Jaz drive for storage.

This project series documents the design and construction of the Royal Ottawa Regional Rehabilitation Centre in Ottawa, Ontario from 1974-1981. The office identified the project number as 7432. The Ottawa Heath Sciences Complex, a vast hospital network encompassing institutions across the city, hired Parkin Architects Planners in 1971 to design and construct University of Ottawa buildings within the network. These campus buildings were located in the Alta Vista neighbourhood and referred to as the Health Sciences Centre. This project consists of one building in that complex, the Royal Ottawa Regional Rehabilitation Centre. The distinction between these names should be noted when viewing the materials. The two-storey rehabilitation centre was constructed directly beside the Ottawa Health Sciences Building, another hospital in the network built by Parkin (see project series AP018.S1.1974.PR01 in this fonds). The proposal conceived a 145,000 square foot hospital with 77 in-patient beds. The design included space for patient accommodation, teaching, research, administrative activities, patient care and treatment, and a concession area. Patients at the hospital would range from those with severe brain injuries, to amputees, to those with rheumatic diseases. The building was carefully designed to accommodate the specialized needs of the patients. The hospital design also included a swimming pool, sports areas, and spaces for other leisure activities thought to aid in the rehabilitation process. The project is recorded through construction photographs, drawings, and textual materials dating from 1971-1983. The textual records include correspondence, specifications, schedules, contract data, conference reports and minutes, inspection reports, predesign notes, consultancy records, financial documents, change orders, supplementary instructions, research, and deficiency lists. The majority of these textual records deal with the hospital's construction, rather than design. Most drawings are reprographic copies of detail drawings and can be found within the textual records. Box AP018.S1.1974.PR25.002 contains an index to the textual records, which was created by the office.

This project series documents Aditya Prakash's proposal for an alternative plan for Chandigarh, India, which came to be known as the Linear City. Prakash began developing and advocating for this idea around the early 1970s. The Linear City had two fundamental ideas at its core. The first was to raise the roadways in Chandigarh (or any future city) 10-12 feet from ground level. This, he proposed, would separate vehicular traffic from pedestrians, eliminating all the hazardous impacts of traffic on daily life. The large part of the drawings for this project show sector plans and city blocks with evenly dispersed roundabout roadways as major transit hubs, wrapping around but high above centres of pedestrian activity that included shops, markets and green spaces. The sale of the land below the roadways would pay for the upheaval. He also recommended building this city only a few sectors deep, but endlessly expanding it length-wise, with a raised canal along one side to provide an additional transportation network and irrigation. The second fundamental idea of this city was the creation of self-sustaining sectors in the city plan, advocating that each neighbourhood should have the infrastructure to provide food and recycling for its residents. He fervently argued for the reimagination of modernist Chandigarh by incorporating sustainable, local traditions - the rural should exist in harmony with the urban. In opposition to Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret, he believed areas for recycling, animal husbandry, and growing food should be incorporated into the fabric of the city.[1] This project is recorded largely through original drawings of city plans, perspectives and axonometric views detailing Prakash's new vision for the city. It seems that many of the perspectives were drawn by family friend Sandeep Virmani, after listening to Prakash's ideas.[2] The project is also recorded through photographs, negatives and slides showing plans and the project model. A small amount of notes and an article on the project are also included.
