Description:
The project series documents the installation "Architettura "Correta"" designed by Pettena for the exhibition "Soleil Politique" at the Museion in Bolzano, in 2014. The project was a design for a new museum entrance. The installation was made of three glass walls on which were drawn facade details of three historical buildings of the city. The central glass wall represents the entrance from the Piacentini square in Bolzano, with, at its left, a ‘serlian’ arch, and, at its right, a detail of the portico of a ‘Piazza d’Italia’ by Giorgio de Chirico. The idea was to "connect the museum to the city’s history, an architectural element was chosen, one which, in addition to favoring the idea of ‘entrance’ to the exhibit also permitted a view both of the urban and the natural setting, the sky, the mountains, an environment typical of the area in which the city itself rises." [1] The project series contains a sketch and a spiral bound volume with correspondence between Pettena and Pierre Bal Blanc, curator of the exhibitions, and proposals for the installation. Description:
File documents Generator, an unexecuted project for the Gilman Paper Company, at the White Oak Plantation, in Yulee, Florida. After an initial investigation Cedric Price proposed a complex that could accommodate company activities, cultural events, and artist residencies and would provide "a menu of items for individual and group demands of space, control, containment and delight. A place to work, create, think, and stare." ('Architectural Review', Jan. 1980, 16). The design called for timber-framed structures with variable infill panels and cladding, along with screens, to be placed on a grid of concrete pads by cranes with the help of computers in response to users' needs. Conceptual, schematic and design development drawings show grid placement, site layout, landscaping, designs for cubes and components, proposed activities, axonometric views, and design notes with sketches. Development sketches, site plans, and charts include site analysis examining future growth, activity charts, shadow study plans, and axonometric details. Drawings of the structures include: plans, elevations, details, and perspective views for cubes, screens, and cladding; shadow studies for cube variations; and axonometric views of cube arrangements. Other drawings include: site plans and sections; landscaping and parking layouts; plans for circulation patterns; drawings for boardwalks; and electrical and drainage plans. Charts study design validity, activities, networks, project feasibility, component life-cycle, and cube and component placement/construction sequencing. Computer generated printouts by John Frazer, et al show perspective views of cubes from various viewpoints. Two sets of annotated reprographic copies show details for a typical cube and the foundation. Presentation and publication materials include: photographs and reprographic copies of design models; coloured reprographic copies of computer parts and facilities; a coloured air-brushed rendering of cubes and screens by "Jeremie '77"; two perspective renderings; and reprographic copies made from published material. Description:
Project series documents Cornelia Hahn Oberlander's project for the new Visitor Centre of VanDusen Botanical Garden in Vancouver, British Columbia. Oberlander worked on this project from 2007 to 2011 with architectural firm Busby Perkins+Will Architects and landscape architecture firm Sharp and Diamond Landscape Architects. The project consisted in building an access to the botanical garden from Oak Street. The building includes a undulating green roof shaped as a native orchid leaf and covered in plants inspired by the Pacific Northwest Coastal grassland. The building entrance is marked by "a single petal raised above the others" [1] while another of the giant roof petal in the back "almost touched the ground, and transported water to Oberlander's rainwater garden." [2] The project series contains design developement drawings such as site plans, planting plans, landscape plans, landscape sections and a few sketches, and also sets of building drawings or older landscape drawings of the garden used as reference. The project is also documented through textual records, including correspondence with architects, consultants and clients, project proposals, documentation on botanical garden or on the VanDusen Botanical Garden, and press articles and clippings about the project. The absence of captions and explanatory text makes detective work necessary as regards exact locations and architects, but as there is no remotely comparable British publication of this date devoted to this kind of house, M.Lévy deserves the warmest appreciation for his zeal. NUC records a copy at Princeton only, and there was no copy of this title in the Weinreb firm's Small English House catalogue of 1977."
