Résumé:
Something Fantastic is about architecture. It is about the future. It is about the environment, energy and politics. It is about beautiful things. It is about being naïve enough to ask the right questions. It isn’t about being hip or calculated, or about posturing. Three young architects, Elena Schuetz, Julian Schubert, and Leonard Streich, lay out a manifesto for(...)

Something Fantastic is about architecture. It is about the future. It is about the environment, energy and politics. It is about beautiful things. It is about being naïve enough to ask the right questions. It isn’t about being hip or calculated, or about posturing. Three young architects, Elena Schuetz, Julian Schubert, and Leonard Streich, lay out a manifesto for increased consciousness in thought and action. Plans and proposals for architecture ranging from the built to the utopian engage this spatial inquiry into the possibilities in the real world.

Résumé:
This book examines the architectural tradition which developed with the religious culture of Islam. Essentially heir to the Roman development of space, it had its source in the ubiquitous courtyard house, while the development of the mosque as both place of worship and the centre of the community, it forms a response to the requirements of prayer set out in the Koran, was given a range of forms as the conquests of Islam came up against the traditions of Egypt, Persia, India and China. The tradition developed further in tombs, palaces and fortifications, all of which are described and illustrated here. The architecture of "Islam" encompasses a high proportion of the world's most beautiful buildings. This book covers the whole range in unprecedented breadth and depth.

Résumé:
Esch Sintzel Architekten, founded in Zurich in 2008, is one of the most influential voices in contemporary Swiss architecture. The range of the firm’s award-winning designs includes varied typologies such as infrastructure buildings, schools, and market halls. Yet, at the core of their work are housing projects in which challenging circumstances often lead to the emergence of very specific solutions and qualities to the benefit of both the individual house or apartment and the city as a whole. Esch Sintzel Architekten’s work is characterized by the prudent use of available resources as well as great respect for the existing fabric and its careful further development. The mastery of structural means enables them to translate technical requirements into expressive, beautiful designs.

Résumé:
"This other Eden" is a captivating narrative of seven great gardens, beautiful canvases that represent not just pleasure grounds but a country's evolution. Showpieces of grand design, they are also barometers of social change; lasting reflections of intellectual endeavour, of religion and philosophy, science and technology, art and literature, from Robert Cecil's garden at Hatfield House, conceived by the famous botanist and plant-collector John Tradescant, who travelled widely to seek out unusual specimens, to Capability Brown, who 'improved' upon nature to create the archetypal English parkland; from Joseph Paxton, whose engineering feats at Chatsworth mirrored the great Victorian age of technology, to Getrude Jekyll, who turned back to nature and designed the English cottage garden renowned the world over.

Résumé:
Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for Edgar Kaufmann Sr., his wife, Liliane Kaufmann, and their son, Edgar Kaufmann jr., Fallingwater is lauded for its architectural daring and drama. Here the Kaufmanns sought to live in harmony with the natural world. The rooms of the house reflect this ideal and remain suffused with a natural aesthetic that embraces stone and wood, handwork and craftsmanship. In the living room, the great stone floor flows riverlike toward the horizon of Wright–designed built-in sofas and large-paned casement windows, where views open to balconies, to forest, and to cascading falls. From here “the hatch” opens to the flowing stream below. Pools and the waters of Bear Run were beautiful and for swimming. Relaxed elegance was the order of the day. Delicacy, softness, tactility are everywhere in evidence.

Résumé:
Architect of the Broadway Chambers Building, the US Custom House, the Minnesota State Capitol, the St. Louis Art Museum, and large-scale projects like the city plan for New Haven, Connecticut, Gilbert is most famous for his skyscrapers - "symbols of our national genius and unrestraint" - monuments of the Beaux Arts "City Beautiful" aesthetic he embraced throughout his career. Containing essays by major Gilbert scholars, Inventing the Skyline documents fascinating details about the buildings: the color scheme of the main entrance of the Minnesota State Capitol, made to resemble the Byzantine tomb of Galla Placidia in Ravenna; the controversy that erupted over the use of female nudes on the relief of the Essex County Courthouse; and the ill-fated plans for the George Washington Bridge as a Beaux Arts monument with elaborate plazas, fountains, and sculptures.

Résumé:
In Exceptional Treehouses, author and treehouse builder Alain Laurens reveals 30 gorgeous treehouse structures, 25 of which are entirely new creations, all illustrated with Daniel Dufour’s beautiful watercolors as well as photographs by Jacques Delacroix, commissioned specially for this book. As in his first book, Treehouse Living, Laurens demonstrates his commitment to sustainable building and environmentalism with his designs, all executed with ecological ideals in mind. In 2000 Laurens started his company, La Cabane Perchée, to design and build treehouses around Europe. Each house takes into account the local environment, as well as the tree in which the structure stands, and the photographs show details of how the treehouses are constructed without driving nails into any part of the host tree. Exceptional Treehouses is the perfect inspiration for treehouse lovers, eco-friendly architects, and enthusiastic amateurs

Résumé:
Architect and photographer Gary Chang spends about 120 days a year traveling all over the world, but he doesn't stay at just any hotel. He plans his trips with exhaustive research on the hotels of his destination and even stays at several different ones during the same trip to one city. His favorite hotels are those places that have a certain special quality, ranging from New York's kitschy Maritime to Budapest's classic Gellert to Zurich's brand-spanking new Zurichberg. Chang's most-loved finds are documented in beautiful photographs, his hand drawn floor plans, and personal texts in Hotel as Home. He presents thirty-five hotels from around the world in this atmospheric book — from the Hotel 101 in Reykjavik to the Hotel Le Corbusier in Marseilles, the Soho House Hotel in New York, the W Hotel in Sydney, the Four Seasons in Tokyo, and the Hotel Metropolitan in Bangkok.
