Weavers' Studio
AP182.S1.2013.D2
Description:
File documents a project for a live-work complex in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India. Commissioned by Chiaki Maki, a Japanese textile weaver who spends a portion of each year in northern India, this complex in the Himalayan foothills provides working space for a studio of twenty-five weavers from all over the country. It is conceived as a cyclical, self-sufficient farm system that integrates all aspects of the weaving process, from cultivating indigo and henna for dye to gathering silk from cocoons and spinning wool. The site had been previously cultivated, and the design works with the landscape's existing pathways, terraces, and mango groves. Nearly all construction materials--including the brick, limestone, and phosphorescent river stones used in the foundation and to treat the brick walls--come from within a two-kilometre radius of the studio. The five-sided building occupying the centre of the site is the workshop itself, which frames a courtyard for gatherings (of weavers, children, etc.). A gallery in the complex displays the weavers' work, while the linear buildings accommodate motorcycle parking, a guest house, and residences for Maki and her partner as well as the site caretaker and his family. File contains artefacts and realia, models, photographs, drawings, site reports, and a video recording.

Description:
Project series documents Cornelia Hahn Oberlander's landscape project for the garden of Linda Yorke and Gordon Forbes in Vancouver, British Columbia. Oberlander worked on this project in the second half of the 1990s. She worked with architect André Rowland who was in charge of designing an addition to the residence designed in the late 1940s by Ned Pratt from architectural firm Sharp, Thompson, Berwick and & Pratt. The project consisted in redesigning the entire yard and adding a play area for children. Oberlander included terraces next to the addition to the house, planting beds and planters. The play area included a tower house accessible by a rope bridge, a two levels playhouse with wooden porch, a slide, a fireman pole and a ladder, and a small water canal with stone edges and activated by a hand pump. The project series contains landscape sketches, design development drawings, including a landscape concept plan, details, sections and elevations for play area and play structures, and building plans used as reference. The project is also documented through correspondence, including with clients, suppliers and consultants, concept notes by Oberlander, plant lists, financial material, research material, and photographs of the landscaping. Description:
This project series documents upgrades and additions to the Servants of the People Society Lajpat Rai Bhawan in Chandigarh, India from 1987-2004. The project consisted of acoustical treatments to the auditorium, the upgrade of the public bathrooms, the addition of research cabins in the library, a children's play area and a parking kiosk. In 2004, there was also a proposal to add a meditation and well-being space to the building. Due to the lengthy timeline, some of these changes may have been separate projects. The project is recorded through original drawings of plans, elevations, sections, details and an axonometric view dating from 1987-2004.
