Résumé:
In this book, Mario Carpo reviews the long history of the computational mode of production, showing how the merger of robotic automation and artificial intelligence will stop and reverse the modernist quest for scale. Today's technologies already allow us to use nonstandard building materials as found, or as made, and assemble them in as many nonstandard, intelligent, adaptive ways as needed: the microfactories of our imminent future will be automated artisan shops. The post-industrial logic of computational manufacturing has been known and theorized for some time. By tracing its theoretical and technical sources, and reviewing the design theories that accompanied its rise, Carpo shows how the computational project is now being recast by the urgency of the climate crisis and by the global pandemic, which has tragically proven its viability. Looking at the work of a new generation of designers, technologists, and producers, this volume offers a new modern agenda for our post-industrial future.

Résumé:
In the 1950s, when contemporary industrial design was just beginning to take off in Italy, Franca Santi Gualtieri was invited to join the editorial team of the fledgling Stile Industria, an offshoot of the influential design magazine, Domus. Written as a personal history of the birth of contemporary Italian industrial design, this charming and engaging paperback maps out the story of Gualtieri's experience at the magazine from the years 1954 to 1963, as well as his close collaboration with the famed, contemporaneous Abitare magazine. Contributors to both magazines made their careers as designers during the era, and are today among the most famous in the world--including Ettore Sottsass, Bruno Munari, Vico Magistretti, Albe Steiner and many others. Stile Industria was a landmark publication that wielded tremendous influence over its 10 years of existence. It defined the design standard during an era when Italy led the way for the rest of the world.

Résumé:
Austrian artist Katharina Anna Loidl has reworked steel engravings of Swiss alpine landscapes, transforming the original nineteenth-century prints with an etching needle and burin. By carefully removing parts of the printer’s ink, Loidl also removes portions of the landscapes. In their place, she introduces simple geometric shapes, deliberately lacking in distinguishing architectural detail so that viewers are encouraged to imagine the addition of structures of their choosing—apartment blocks, industrial buildings, or sports facilities—to the idyllic images. Landscape Engravings brings together fifty of Loidl’s alpine landscapes. Vitus Weh's essay examines the sublime and crystalline character of Loidl’s art, and Paolo Bianchi looks at aspects of romanticism as a fund, landscape as a sensation, and the art of repetition. By introducing spatial interventions to the idyllic, perhaps idealized, images, Loidl asks the reader to consider the impact of residential and industrial encroachment on the natural world and the value we ought to place on its preservation.

Résumé:
The Bauhaus, the school of art and design founded in Germany in 1919 and shut down by the Nazis in 1933, brought together artists, architects and designers--among them Anni and Josef Albers, Herbert Bayer, Marcel Breuer, Lyonel Feininger, Walter Gropius, Johannes Itten, Vasily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Lilly Reich, Oskar Schlemmer, Gunta Stolzl--in an extraordinary conversation on the nature of art in the industrial age. Bauhaus 1919-1933: Workshops for Modernity, published to accompany a major multimedia exhibition offers a new generational perspective on the twentieth century's most influential experiment in artistic education. Organized in collaboration with the three major Bauhaus collections in Germany, this book examines the extraordinarily broad spectrum of the school's products, including industrial design, furniture, architecture, graphics, photography, textiles, ceramics, theater and costume design, painting and sculpture. Many of the objects discussed and illustrated here have rarely if ever been seen or published outside Germany.

Résumé:
In recent years and decades, dealing with the architectural legacy of the industrial age has been an increasingly common task for urban planning: industrial buildings and sites, infrastructure, and residential areas that have become vacant lots as a result of structural transformation cannot, if only because of their dimensions, be ignored within the urban space. Innovative reinterpretations of such relics that update existing building fabric in a way that goes beyond critical reconstruction or revitalization, such as the Toni Site in Zurich or the Île de Nantes, can be observed throughout Europe these days. The publication urbanRESET brings together succinct examples of this separate category of urban-planning from throughout Europe. The projects are presented in detail with plans and color illustrations. Interviews with key players and theoretical essays show how local processes of reinterpretation and reactivation can produce sustainable effects. urbanRESET sheds light on the common foundations of these works and condenses them into methodological inferences for a forward-looking urban praxis.
