"A recent novel by the English writer A. S. Byatt features a runaway boy who escapes the brutal conditions of an 1890s pottery factory in the English Midlands, to find refuge in the South Kensington Museum (now the V&A). At night he sleeps in the storerooms and by day feeds himself from leftovers in the café. The museum gives him shelter and twenty-four-hour access to Asian, Middle Eastern, and European ceramics. By contrast with industrially produced pottery, the exquisite vases and figurines he studies are made by individual craftsmen. They inspire him to create something himself. This idea of the museum as a place of refuge and self-realization made me think of the curatorial structure for dOCUMENTA (13), which addresses four states of being: under siege, on retreat, on stage, and in a state of hope.
