Projet
AP075.S1.1995.PR02
Description:
Project series documents Cornelia Hahn Oberlander's project for landscape master plan of Smith College campus, Northampton, Massachusetts. Oberlander worked on this project from 1995-1997 in collaboration with Shavaun Towers from landscape architectural firm Rolland/Towers. The project required to preserve the historic landscaping, initially design by Frederick Law Olsmsted, while also taking into account future growth of the campus. In this idea Oberlander and Towers bases their landscape master plan on six key concepts: to preserve the sacred spaces of the campus, to restore Olmsted vision, to develope open spaces in an hierarchical fashion, to limite vehicular traffic and separate it from pedestrian circulation, to provide stronger pedestrian connexions and commun spaces for social interactions, and to expande and enhance the Botanic Garden on the campus. The project series contains concept notes by Oberlander, research and reference material, proposal, meetings notes, contract, correspondence, mostly with landscape architects, clients and consultants, and financial documents. The project is also documented through landscape master plans for Oberlander and Towers proposal and campus landscape plans and previous landscape working drawings used as reference. The project series also contains photographic materials, such as slides and photographs, of the college landscaping, and postcards of Smith College.

River Clyde Competition
AP144.S2.D90
Description:
File documents an unsuccessful competition entry for the River Clyde Study & Ideas Competition, organised by the City of Glasgow, Scotland, for the rehabilitation of sections of the river bank. Cedric Price's entry proposed the conversion of existing coal yards and abandoned docks with a "metropolitan farm" including a food-growing complex, fish and hydroponic farms, and marketing facilities, along with a new public river transportation system. An existing conditions survey and a map show the docks and areas along the River Clyde. Design development drawings of diagrams and charts explore the various activities and the accommodation of each activity within the design limitations associated with it. Components of the plan are organized by activity type, location, and the amount of time required per activity. The activities shown include shopping, observation, gardening, employment, sports, and retraining. Other components of the plan are shown in detail: housing, the city farm, research center, a ferry and ferry stop, and a floating jungle. A diagram plots the travel time from the project area to various locations within Glascow. A public survey card monitors the project. One plan compares the size of this project site with other sites including that of Abu Dhabi Breakwater (AP144.S2.D94). Reprographic copies show regional relevance, and explore "test-bed" areas for activities such as forestry and agriculture. Some material in this file was published in 'Cedric Price-Works II' (London: Architectural Press, 1984), 36, 39. Material in this file was produced between 1973 and1988, but predominantly in 1973. File contains conceptual drawings, design development drawings, cartographic materials, and textual records.

BAA/LHA/North
AP144.S2.D65
Description:
File documents several commissions undertaken for the British Airports Authority for the re-development of the north side of Heathrow Airport, in Hillingdon, Greater London, England, United Kingdom, with respect to the revision of BAA's Master Development Plan. Cedric Price was commissioned to present proposals for the redevelopment of the site, and for an office block, a computer center, and a boiler house. Existing conditions materials for the site include plans of the airport, plans showing height limitations, flight, and landing paths, a regional survey, aerial photographs, and a photographic panorama of the site. Existing conditions materials for the office block include site plans. Diagrammatic sketches show the relationship between various "activity" zones. Design development drawings and reprographic copies for the site include alternate site plans, site plans charting sound levels, and project progress charts. Plans show traffic flow and growth patterns, area usage, height restrictions, and potential long-term uses for the site. Design development drawings for the office block include a preliminary structural scheme, alternate office layouts, axonometric drawings, plans, sections and diagrams for the lift, graphs showing parking ratios, a diagrammatic section and grid for a parking layout, and plans, sections and diagrams for the parking structure and building entrances. Axonometric drawings show volumetric comparisons for areas designated for computers and their use. Material for the boiler house consists of two existing conditions plans, a location diagram, and an axonometric drawing. Cedric Price produced two reports for the British Airport Authority. Material from this file was published in Price, Cedric. 'Cedric Price-Works II' (London: Architectural Press, 1984), 43. Material in this file was produced between 1963 and 1970. Douglas Smith, of Baker Wilkins & Smith, is Cedric Price's quantity surveyor on this project; Margaret Maxwell is the landscape consultant hired by BAA; and Zisman, Bowyer & Partners is the firm of consulting engineers hired by BAA. File contains conceptual drawings, design development drwings, reference drawings, presentation drawings, photographic materials, and textual records.
