Résumé:
In Paris, capital of modernity, Harvey presents an account of the city in a remarkably turbulent era, framed by two failed revolutions. His key concern is how a new form of finance capitalism combined with a new type of planning vision to produce the prototypical modern city. Also, there are insights throughout about subjects such as the birth of the consumerist spectacle on the Parisian boulevards; the creative visions of Balzac, Baudelaire, and Zola; and the reactionary cultural politics of the bombastic Sacré Coeur, the Catholic monument erected to efface all memory of the revolutionary Paris Commune that arose briefly when the empire collapsed.

Résumé:
The eleventh issue of "The Funambulist" can be read as the third installment of a trilogy about the territorialities and architectures of colonialism and postcolonialism. It is dedicated to the precise and strategic political order behind the apparent disorder of debris and ruin in various geographical and historical contexts. The current situations of systematic destruction historically and currently experienced by Syrian and Palestinian populations provides a core to this issue to which are added accounts of the Uyghur, Tamil, and Black American struggles respectively in Xinjiang, Eelam, and the United States, as well as historical descriptions of survival bodies in Sarajevo and monument desecration in West Africa and the Carribeans.

Following the 1968 earthquake in Sicily, plans were produced for the total reconstruction of the destroyed town of Gibellina, inspired by the models of the English New Towns. After an initial phase in which international architects and artists participated in the urban redesign, in the late 1970s a series of seminars and workshops was held at the University of Palermo to take stock of the reconstruction. Oswald Mathias Ungers (1926–2007) was then called to design the town’s central area, which was still undefined. His Civic Centre proposal reflected on the relationship between built and public space, and between city, monument, and history. Ultimately, however, little was realized.

Issue 440 explores how contemporary architecture and art negotiate memory, scale, and cultural expression. From Prada’s Fifteen-Minute Architecture—featuring OMA/AMO’s stage design and an interview with Giulio Margheri, Herbert Wright, and Nowk Choe—to the storytelling of Awulai Ashia & Nkyinkyim at Gagosian, the issue tracks creative work across disciplines. Urban heritage shapes Oostenburg by Studioninedots and Urhahn. Essays and interviews extend to Kunsthaus Baselland by Buchner Bründler Architekten and the Zollverein Monument Trail by New Architekten, revealing new cultural possibilities.
