This archaeological history and guide to Mycenae is based on the results of detailed scientific investigation of the site by the best qualified scholar in the field. The book is intended as an introduction to Mycenae and its civilization, and, though Homeric illustrations are quoted, its main concern is the accurate description of archaeological facts. Mycenae is one of the most famous of Greek cities. Its mythological connection with the Labors of Herakles and his taskmaster Eurystheus, its legendary association with Perseus and the House of Atreus, and its Homeric fame as the stronghold of Agamemnon have made its name renowned in every age, Of its surviving monuments, the Lion Gate, the Cycoplean Walls, and the Treasury of Atreus are among the archeological wonders of the world. The life and culture of Mycenae in the Greek Bronze Age--that heroic age of which Homer painted so magnificent a picture--has been made known, first through the spectacular discoveries of Schliemann, later through excavations conducted by Schliemann's successor, Tsountas, and most recently by Mr. Wace, who was in charge of the recent excavations there.
