This project series documents the Complexo de Complexo de Habitação, Comércio e Serviços Horta da Torrinha Rotunda do Raimundo, in Évora, Portugal. While the records were held in the office’s archives this project was assigned the number 79/90. The office assigned the dates 1996-1998 to this project. The project is divided into four buildings. Edificio 1 was a 5150 m3 three-storey building for offices and commercial use. Edificio 2 was a 2914 m3 four-storey residential unit, with space for stores on the ground floor. Edificios 3 and 4 are dwellings that are already built and were intended to be restored. The project was not realized. Documenting this project are sketches, plans, studies, and details. Photographic material documents the models. Texual material includes project documentation and correspondence with the client.

Description:
This project series documents the Edifício de Escritórios na Av. D. Afonso Henriques, in Porto, also referred to as Avenida da Ponte I. While the records were held in the office’s archives this project was assigned the number 31/60. In the past the office identified the project as number 121. The office assigned the dates 1968-1974 for this project. The Edifício de Escritórios na Av. D. Afonso Henriques consisted of a building with offices, stores, and parking. Located on a historic site, the intention for the Edifício de Escritórios was to integrate the building into the existing urban landscape. The building was never realized. This project was done in relation to the Arranjo Urbanístico para a Av. D. Afonso Henriques, which was an urban renewal program in Porto. In the 1940s, waves of demolition in the old town created a rupture with the remaining buildings, including the Porto Cathedral. Since the 1950s, there have been several studies and proposals to revitalize this part of the city. Siza’s plan was the first to be accepted by the city council in 1968. Please see project series AP178.S1.1968.PR03, also described in this fonds, for further documentation. Siza also proposed a new design in 2001 for the site across the avenue from this one, known as Avenida da Ponte II. This included a museum, library, stores, parking, and houses. This project related to the building Casa Dos 24 Fernando Távora. The scheme was not realized. Documenting this project series are drawings, photographic materials and textual documentation. Among the drawings are plans, profiles, elevations, sections, cadastral maps and working details. Photographic materials document the model, site and residents of the neighborhood. Textual materials include project documentation, as well as correspondence with the city of Porto and suppliers. Note that materials related to the Arranjo Urbanístico para a Av. D. Description:
This project series documents an extension and additions to the Milkfed Punjab milk plant in Jalandhar, India from 1982-1985, governed by The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB). This project consisted of an extension to the main milk plant, as well as the building of a garage, stores, service block, duty rooms and an addition to the administrative block. An orchard and covered bike area were also proposed. The main plant extension, used for the processing of butter and ghee, was multi-leveled with a primary height of two-storeys but reaching up to four storeys. Different schemes were proposed for the administrative block addition, one which showed a square building and the other showing a round building. The duty rooms, dotted with irregularly placed and sized geometric windows, had a roof that curled up at one end, opening to expose windows. The project is recorded through original drawings dating from 1973, which include plans, elevations, sections, perspectives and details.

File documents an unexecuted project for a multiple use building in Birmingham, England, for Shantasea Limited. Cedric Price resigned as the architect for the project and took on the role of architect for Birmingham and Midland Institute (BMI), one of the proposed tenants for the Shantasea project. The multi-functional centre was to include a theatre, TV studios, an audio-visual exhibition area, retail stores, offices, a meeting hall, a gallery, a seminar area, a library, and parking within an approx. 3,500,000 square-foot area. Drawings include sections showing preliminary circulation patterns, and design development drawings for seven alternate schemes, each with different total square footage. Volumetric studies compare functions and areas for each design. This project series documents St. John's City Hall and Civic Centre in Newfoundland from 1968-1970. The office identified the project number as 68002. This project consisted of three phases of development, with phase I being city hall, phase II being a commercial redevelopment, and phase III being additional public buildings. The master program included plans for a library, department store, supermarket, retail stores, a movie theatre, a hotel with a restaurant and banquet hall, a bus terminal and 160 residential units. It is not clear from the project materials whether these buildings were realized. The city hall site consisted of a concrete building on New Grower Street, which sat atop a concrete podium with parking below. A system of diagonal terraces with pedestrian areas also made up the podium. City hall, which was approximately four-storeys at its maximum height, included council chambers, offices, a great hall with artifacts and memorials, and municipal departments, among others. This project won an Award of Excellence for The Canadian Architect in 1968. The project is recorded through reprographic copies of mechanical and electrical drawings dating from 1970.

This project series documents the restoration of the Castro & Melo building in Lisbon, Portugal. While the records were held in the office’s archives this project was assigned the number 58/80 N 8/9. The office assigned the date 1988-1998 for this project. The Edificio Castro e Melo was part of Bloco A and identified as building 8/9 in the reconstruction plan of Siza. The structure of the building, originally built in the18th century in order to resist earthquakes, was rebuilt in concrete. Archival research was done in order to reproduce as much as possible the original style of the building. The interior of the building was reorganized to introduce dwellings. The first and second floors were kept as they were originally for stores and storerooms. The third and fourth floors were built for offices. The fifth, sixth and seventh floors were rearranged to introduce apartments to the building. The eighth floor was used for the technical equipment of the building. In 1996, Siza received the Secil prize for this building. Drawings include studies, working drawings, mechanical drawings, and details of finishes. Textual material includes project documentation, studies, and correspondence. Photographic material include images of studies, details of the interior and exterior, as well as construction work. It is important to mention that documentation can also be found in subseries Master plans and exterior spaces (AP178.S1.1988.PR07.SS1) and Bloco A (AP178.S1.1988.PR07.SS2).

The Grandes Armazéns do Chiado was part of Bloco C and identified as building 4 in Siza's reconstruction plan. The site of the Grandes Armazéns served several different functions in its history, including a hotel, a palace, and a convent, before becoming a department store in 1894. In the 1920s, a hotel was created at the top floors. After the destructive fire of 1988, the new owners of the building were interested in using the totality of the building for a shopping mall and restaurants. On the other hand, Siza's proposal included the expansion of the hotel in the building to introduce more public activity in the area after the regular work and shopping hours. Several programs were proposed to the owners of the building, and it was decided in 1996 that the hotel space would be reduced to the two top floors to have more room for the shopping center. The new division included 41 hotel rooms and 41 stores. The interior of the shopping mall was designed by Eduardo Souto Moura. Drawings include studies, working drawings, mechanical drawings, and structural drawings. Textual material includes project documentation, studies, meeting reports, and correspondence. Photographic material includes photographs of the building before the fire, ruins, model, and construction work. Afonso Henriques (see project series AP178.S1.1968.PR02 described in this fonds). In the 1940s, demolition created a rupture with the remaining buildings, including the Porto Cathedral. Since the 1950s, there have been several studies and proposals to rearrange this part of the city. Siza’s plan was the first to be accepted by the city council in 1968. The project consisted of a new layout for the Avenue D. Afonso Henriques, the connection between the Luis I Bridge to the D. Pedro Square and the São Bento Railway Station. The intention of the project was also to reduce traffic. The project was not realized. Siza also proposed a new design in 2001 for the site across the avenue from this one, known as Avenida da Ponte II. This included a museum, library, stores, parking, and houses. This project related to the building Casa Dos 24 Fernando Távora. The scheme was not realized. Documenting the Arranjo Urbanistico are studies and site plans.
