"The English Baroque country house is a discovery of comparatively recent years. For forty years, ever since Avray Tipping produced his Sir John Vanbrugh and His School, Vanbrugh has been seen as the giant figure of the period, a position that in more recent years he has come to share with Hawksmoor. Now their contribution is seen in a wider context and the origins of the Baroque style are traced back to the late 1670s and early 1680s and its last phase to provincial architecture in the 1730s. In this volume, which links English Country Houses: Caroline by Oliver Hill and John Cornforth to Christopher Hussey's trilogy on the Early, Mid and Late Georgian periods, James Lees-Milne explores the development of the movement not only in terms of architectural style but also in relation to political and social history. His subject is a dramatic one for it includes some of the grandest and more spectacular houses ever built in England, among them Chatsworth, Petworth, Castle Howard, Blenheim and Seaton Delaval, as well as smaller, lesser known ones like Winslow Hall (one of the few houses designed by Wren), Hanbury Hall and Chicheley Hall. Indeed, there are so many houses that deserve to be included that notes on 161 are included in an illustrated appendix: a number of them no longer exist, but they are represented by painting and engravings, and sources of further information are given for all of them. As in previous volumes, this book is divided into two parts. It opens with a long introduction in which the whole period is surveyed and special attention devoted to architects whose work is not adequately represented in surviving houses. William Talman is a key figure in this respect: although well known for his contributions to Chatsworth, the full extent of his career is only now being revealed. The second part of the book is devoted to detailed descriptions of twenty-eight outstanding houses.
