The author claims that twentieth-century America presents to the historian a picture of endlessly repeated failures. To explore the historical reasons for these failures, the author examines the history of a single city--Philadelphia. Selecting three periods, 1770-1780, 1830-1860, and 1920-1930, the author follows the history of the city from the nation's founding to the eve of the Great Depression.
