In the early 1930s Miss Lange moved away from formal portraits to seek her subjects outside of her studio. She recognized her fundamental commitment to people, and her work became the expression of an intense vision of ordinary people in ordinary circumstances of their life. Her immensely influential work for the Farm Security Administration called attention to the needs of rural America during the tragedy of the dust bowl years.
