"The art of the Romans was, above everything else, an art of organization. This volume amply displays the unique quality of Roman art—as the expression of a complex political system that encompassed geographical areas stretching across Europe, England, North Africa, and large regions of Asia. Although it is impossible to include all of Roman art in one volume (coins, for example, are not dealt with fully herein), the present book encompasses more of Roman art—in its incisive text, 900 illustrations and supplementary materials—than any previous work ever published. Written by the internationally known scholar and teacher Bernard Andreae, The Art of Roman is divided into five separate but interrelated parts. In the major text, the art of the Romans is described chronologically as it reflects political, social, economic, and cultural forces in the Roman state, both the Republic and the Empire. Biographies and portraits of the Roman rulers—dictators and emperors—open each chapter, and this text is buttressed by 159 superb full-page colorplates. They vividly illustrate the splendid temples, palaces, forums, baths, tombs, sculpture, and wall paintings that served as expressions of grandeur—and sometimes propaganda—for successive rulers. Black-and-white documentary photographs, grouped together in the second part, present the major artistic ensembles characteristic of Roman art—the great architectural complexes, relief cycles, sarcophagi, wall paintings, and portrait busts—in never-before-attempted completeness. Architecture and urban planning receive similar comprehensive treatment in the third part of the text, plans, photographs, and maps. More than 50 important archaeological sites throughout the far-flung Empire, beginning with the city of Rome itself, are studied in detail.
