The need of a good general history of the province of New Brunswick is now met in this authoritative and interesting book by the man best equipped to write it. Stewart MacNutt, Professor of History at the University of New Brunswick, has been preparing himself for the writing of his book for the past 12 years, and the result is a chronicle that will remain the final and most fascinating word in its field for a long time. When the American revolutionary war ended, what was to become New Brunswick was almost the last wilderness on the Atlantic seaboard. Into his hinterland of Nova Scotia flowed thousands of the sturdy Loyalists whom the war had transformed from the settled and prosperous into the uprooted and dispossessed. The result of this experience was to be a people who, as a condition of survival, had to become cautious and severely practical - and sturdier than ever. The development of the province they made when government from Halifax proved impractical is an absorbing story. Stewart MacNutt has gathered an immense amount of material on early settlement, the development of government at all levels, the politics of timber (the province's great staple), forest management, the effects of the Napoleonic Wars, and the gradual move toward responsible government. New Brunswick did not achieve solid prosperity until the middle of 19th century, and then the question of Canadian Confederation arose. In this design the province clearly had a key role, and the struggles that preceded New Brunswick's acceptance are described in detail of considerable interest and value. Complete as it is, Professor MacNutt's important history is no formal account of events that overlooks people. Nowhere else can be found the colourful gallery of the individuals who made New Brunswick - and who will make this a cherished book.
