This is a biography of an 18th-century country house and of the man who tamed the wild hills of west Wales to create a Roman idyll there. We live, said Thomas Johnes of Hafod, like peacocks in paradise. Thomas Johnes's rebuilding of the original mansion at Hafod with its Nash enlargement, his schemes for road-making and planting of three million trees, his advanced farming and horticultural methods, his printing press, library collection and exquisite furnishings, his extravagant entertainment of his guests led to inevitable financial ruin. Tragically he had to watch his vision fade and see his treasure taken away.
