Windmills are one of the most evocative sights of the countryside in Europe, England and America. They have been immortalised in literature, song and painting and there are still people who remember seeing the last of the working mills grinding corn in the Low Countries and in East Anglia. Today they are much loved and preserved in surprisingly large numbers. There are several hundred in varying states of preservation in Britain alone, several thousand on the continet of Europe and some in America, too. Suzanne Beedell describes how mills work and gives full historical information about them. There are sections in her book on preservation and millwrighting, and the various types of mill and their functions are covered in detail, including a chapter on using them as homes. The windmills of Holland, France, Denmark, England, America and other countries are all described in some detrail. Every section of the book is illustrated with diagrams and photographs, so that in pictures as well as in text it is a comprehensive study of the subject. For the person who knows little about mills but wants to find out this book provides a complete survey withou being too technical. For the windmill lover, because of its scope and its fine illustrations, it fills the gaps between the technical books and papers and the regional studies and introductory brochures at present in print.
