"Among the portrait studios that prospered in America in the early 1840s, one Boston firm achieved international prominence: the studio of Albert Sands Southworth and Josiah Johnson Hawes. Formed in 1843 and dissolved in 1862, their partnership produced an extraordinary range of portraits and views widely celebrated for their technical brilliance and aesthetic superiority. The two partners welcomed as clients personalities representing the cultural core of 19th-century America: Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Lemuel Shaw, Zachary Taylor, Harriet Beecher Stowe and Daniel Webster.
