"It has been my experience in a business life of twenty years, to find that the simpler parts of construction, those too, on which the comfort of the house most depends, are very often left to the skill of the builder. The architect's drawings serve as hints merely, as it is natural for him to feel that his theory is far less valuable than the builder's experience. In developing the courses at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology it has seemed wise that the students should know something more than the mere nomenclature learned by rote in the specifications; that they should learn the different methods of accomplishing the same object in construction, in order to know why one is better or worse than another. This series of plates is the outcome of this course of study. The greatest pains been taken to have the work represent the best methods of construction. At times there are shown inferior methods that have become popular through habitual use, in order that their defects may be pointed out, and a simple change in the specification show how they may be made good."--Preface, signed Francis Ward Chandler, Boston, May 12, 1892.
