First edition. These are the most theoretical of Gilpin's works; the general principles developed here are reduced to principles of landscape in the Remarks on forest scenery. Gilpin was the true pioneer of the picturesque. In his extensive series of books of picturesque tours plus the present work and the Remarks he taught the reader to observe the different characteristics of each region, and "Gilpin's remarks on natural as opposed to stylized scenery, taken with the new concept of regionalism, influenced the reaction to stylized landscaping." - Oxford Companion to Gardens, page 227.
