"This collection of 16 essays reveals provocative common ground between contemporary craft, architecture and decorative arts. The chief feature of the common ground is the integration of designing and making. Long considered the birthright of craftspeople, it is now the focus of contemporary architectural analysis. Scholars, architects and craftspeople - inspired by the historical precedent of the Bauhaus and architectural theorists such as Gottfried Semper - probe the contemporary relevance of the relationship between the design process, building or making methods and materials ... This volume includes essays by museum and gallery professionals that trace the historical precedents of their craft collections, the patrons who shaped them, and the current direction of institutional policies regarding the collecting and exhibiting of craft.
