Watercolour painting by Wolfgang Gerson, created in 1948 when he was a professor of architecture at the University of Manitoba. Showing an awareness of contemporary surrealism and the work of artists such as Salvador Dali and Jean Miro, Gerson's dream-like painting depicts a flat landscape under a bright blue sky, populated by numerous abstract geometric, biological, and amorphous forms. The work, which perhaps anticipated the advent of post-war modernism in western Canada, is signed in the lower right corner - Humanised Prairie. W.G. 48.
