LeBreton Flats residential community is located in downtown Ottawa and has been developed by CMHC as an exemplary inner city community. This pamphlet is the sixth in a series describing experiments undertaken at LeBreton Flats. One of the objectives of the LeBreton Flats, Phase 1 development was to provide housing for physically disabled people. In the LeBreton Flats, Phase 1 development, the decision was made to demonstrate the concept of integrated housing for disabled people. Integrated housing provides specially designed units for disabled people who wish to live independently. The most common form of integrated housing is to disperse disabled persons in specially designed units throughout an apartment building.
(Cont'd) To illustrate this particular housing concept, nine units for disabled occupants were designed and developed in Parcel 6, the first project developed in Phase 1. The LeBreton designers expanded on the conventional approach to integrated housing by dispersing the units throughout the Parcel 6 site.
