Please destroy this book. Let it free into the world. In the summer of 2006, while teaching in New York City at The Kitchen, I met Aaron Hughes: an artist, student, and recently returning soldier. Only months previously he had been discharged from the army. Since our first meeting, and his return home to the states from Iraq, Aaron has set about to creatively interpret his service in the army, his time in the field, and to utilize his skills as a creative force to do his part to help end the war in Iraq. One of the outlets that Aaron has available to assist him in achieving this goal is the anti-war organization Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW), of which he is the president of the organizations Great Lakes chapter. In the fall of 2007 Aaron and I discussed the idea of Red76 and the Great Lakes chapter of the IVAW collaborating with one another on a project to combat the army’s recruitment efforts. Aaron brought up a simple plan that he had considered, and we both decided that it was the right step to take; an open source initiative that anyone could take part in, assist in helping to spread the word about, and contribute their energies to in their own way. This project, entitled Befriend a Recruiter, is incredibly simple, and we urge you to join in. Here’s how: get in touch with a recruiter. Tell them you are interested in joining the army and that you would like to learn more. Sign nothing. Keep talking for as long as you can bare it…
