The interactive eBook Meet Thy Spirits is based on hundreds of sketchbooks that Birgit Kempker has filled with her drawings for years. In the sketched sheets, language and image find a common wavelength, posing big, existential questions with full force and yet also with delicate vulnerability. Humor and despair reveal themselves in the works entwined in a paradoxical and magical symbiosis, whose suggestive effect is hard to resist. Birgit Kempker developed the digital book Meet Thy Spirits from her drawings, in collaboration with media artist Esther Hunziker. In the interactive eBook, the drawings layer over one another, creating new constellations: elements start to move, figures begin to speak, texts dissolve. All the while, Birgit Kempker’s voice appears and reappears, commenting or drawing new lines from off-screen. As if watching the formation of the artist’s own thoughts, the book takes an adventurous rollercoaster ride into the imponderables of human existence at a time of heightened uncertainty.
