Résumé:

"Historic architectural surveys have played a key role in the evolution of the preservation movement and in the survival of countless buildings important to the history of American architecture and culture. Noted photographer Frances Benjamin Johnston (1864-1952) embarked on a project to document the restored Chatham Estate and surrounding buildings in Virginia from 1927 through 1929. The success of this project inspired her to continue to capture crumbling high style vernacular architecture throughout the South with the hopes of aiding in the preservation of these buildings.
