"This book approaches the possibility of a design methodology based on four "identity processes"--Appropriation, Assimilation, Denial, and Conciliation - borrowed from the Lacanian perspective on the makings of one's identity. It takes the form of a handbook, a soft manual for architectural design, clearly structured into two sections: Processes and Projects. In the first part, each of the four proposed identity building processes is expanded upon through an interview with an architect or architectural historian whose work hints at a certain affinity to the respective process: Maarten Delbeke and Assimilation, Frederike Lausch and Appropriation, Léon Krier and Rejection, Jonathan Sergison and Conciliation. For the Projects section, the practices Made in, Sam Jacob Studio, Monadnock, Bruther, Bureau Spectacular, Studio Muoto, and Conen Sigl were invited to each design a dwelling referring to the four identity building processes as guidelines and using only elements of previously existing projects by other architects"--From page [4] of cover.
