Husband and wife team Gillian Hopwood and John Godwin spent the majority of their career in Lagos, Nigeria where they helped to shape post-independence architecture. Their key buildings include oil company Shell's Bookshop House, a residence for Australia's High Commissioner in Nigeria, a series of schools and numerous factory buildings. In this talk, the couple discuss meeting at the AA, the chance offer of work that took them to Nigeria in the 1950s, and the start of a life abroad, breaking away from old conventions and their contribution to the country's architectural development as it emerged from British colonialism
