"ANAMIKA was a newsletter by and for South Asian lesbians published in New York City from 1985 through 1987. Co-editors Khayal and Utsa sought to create a forum for Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Afghani, Sri Lankan, Bhutanese, Nepali, and Burmese lesbians to communicate with each other across the South Asian diaspora and to instigate international dialogue in the face of familial and societal rejection, the suppression of open discussion about sexuality and gender, racism in the West, and the resulting isolation of these hardships. They chose the name "Anamika," a Sanskrit word, because it "represents the unnamed, the unnameable, or that which is yet to be named," likening this definition to their own lived experiences. Aware of their position as South Asian immigrants publishing from the US, they aimed to combat the notion that lesbians are a Western phenomenon. In their first issue, the editors write that "[we] were lesbians before we came here" and include a bibliography of resources to demonstrate that "lesbianism has been a part of our histories for thousands of years." In an interview with Susan Heske in the thirteenth issue of the lesbian-feminist journal Conditions (1986), Khayal begins by saying that "there are, always have been, always will be, lesbians in India." Later in the interview, Utsa identifies the motivation for their work: "I think that it is important that we make a beginning. It is not as if you wake up someday and you realize that the issue of lesbianism can be brought out into the open. It takes a lot of time and courage on our parts." The letterforms in this font are based on the title treatment featured on the covers of Anamika. Gaps in the alphabet were filled by emulating existing forms as needed. The uppercase, in combination with brackets, allows for styling text in a box like the title treatment.
