Résumé:

This book is based on the study of the physical remains of Irish castles. It argues that in each different design the balance of display, comfort or military security tells us much about the builder's view on power and social organisation. It challenges the idea of a widespread state of war in medieval Ireland, between English and Irish or otherwise. It charts the optimism of economic expansion before 1200 AD, when English lords brought the idea of castles to Ireland, through to the reconstructed landscape and society of the more regionally specialised fifteenth century.
