It is the purpose of the present catalogue to document as fully as possible the complete range of the public monuments and sculpture of Liverpool from the earliest surviving item to the most recently erected. Just one clearly-defined category has been excluded from the survey: sculpture in an ecclesiastical context or executed for a sepulchral purpose. What remains is a rich and multifarious concentration within the city of not only independent pieces, such as grand monuments, portrait statues, abstract sculptures and commemorative fountains, but also sculpture executed to embellish the city's civic and commercial architecture.
The volume is arranged with works in order by location and details are given of materials, dimensions, ownership, condition and literature, with photographic illustration provided for almost all of the works included.
