Glasgow is the prime British example of the industrial city, and this lavishly illustrated book traces its architectural and socio-economic history from its merchant origins, right through the nineteenth- and twentieth-century urban decline, and onwards to its present, much celebrated regeneration.
Accounts by leading architectural and civil engineering historians describe Glasgow's phases of growth and change and the building ventures through which these changes were realised, and, outlining the conservation programmes currently underway to preserve the former tenement slums, the grander suburbs and the historic merchant centre, they reveal why Glasgow is now recognised as the 'finest surviving example of a great Victorian city'.
