Free from the constraints of the client-architect relationship, the buildings present Wright at his unfettered best. Photographed for the first time in exquisite, full-color panoramic views by longtime Wright photographer Roger Straus, these images capture the buildings as part of the landscape--the way Wright envisioned them. As well, Hugh Howard's insightful text reveals an intimate understanding of the great architect's art and philosophy. Wright built three residences for himself: the home and studio in suburban Oak Park, Illinois; Taliesin on family land in Spring Green, Wisconsin; and Taliesin West in the desert town of Scottsdale, Arizona. Treated as three distinct stages in a time-line of the architect's long and varied career, these houses constitute a kind of architectural biography, incorporating the threads of Wright's life and thinking. Wright for Wright details these houses and the ones that Wright designed for his sons David Wright and Robert Llewellyn Wright, as well as the house he built for his cousin Richard Lloyd Jones. Unity Chapel, for the Lloyd Joneses; the Hillside Home School and Romeo and Juliet Windmill, for his aunts Nell and Jane Lloyd Jones; and Tan-Y-Deri House, for his sister Jane Porter, are among the structures examined in the book. Midway Farm's various structures at Taliesin and the Music Pavilion at Taliesin West, which he built for himself, are also thoroughly described.
