Garden art between yesterday and tomorrow is a wide-ranging theme for landscape architecture. It is being implemented in an exemplary fashion and in an ideal location at the present time. Postdam's parkland and gardens, original the work of Lenne, Schinkel and Persius in the 19th century and of international importance, form the impressive backdrop for today's ambitious projects. Landscape architects, artists, gardeners, architects and other designers demonstrate their answers to the question of how it is possible to use the resources of nature, environmental design and art in response to places shaped by history. Four new settings have been staged in an exemplary fashion on the new park site, in the town centre, by the riverside and at the point of transition to the open landscape. A wide range of tasks are being tackled here, including a contemporary people's park, a large urban square, important show gardens from the days of classical Modernism or the innovative treatment of former agricultural land. Encounters with architecture and urban design are among the central aspects of landscape architecture. Thus the large park becomes the green centre of a new urban quarter that is to emerge in the future. The central hall, an events venue with an avant-garde design, enters in to an exciting dialogue with the park, described by Peter Wilson in his essay. This lavishly produced book conveys much of the visual fascination emanating form the gardens, parks, and squares at the National Horticultural Show 2001.
