Written by an international group of historians and archaeologists, the essays describe the authors' researches regarding the city's Armenian, Byzantine, and western Gothic churches; the heraldic shields and fortifications of the Venetians; the source of the city's wealth as a port and source of trade in textiles; and descriptions and analysis of the sculpture, wall painting, and the dating and chronology of the city's most famous church, the Gothic Cathedral of St Nicholas.
