"This book is the product of cooperation between a Shanghainese photojournalist and a Shanghailander, an American researcher drawn to the city only twelve years ago. For three years we have prowled the streets of Shanghai, searching for the only remaining evidence of an earlier western presence here: Shanghai's western-style buildings. We have sought out the most evocative and the most interesting to research, to photograph, and to share with old Shanghailanders and those caught up in the magic of the city. Each foray has found a new thinning of the ranks, new victims of the urban renewal now sweeping through Shanghai like a scythe: facades defaced by smoked glass and garish additions, classic old buildings pulled down to make way for widened streets or high-rise complex[e]s. Sadly, some of the superb structures we have selected no longer exist, at least not in the form in which they are pictured here. Thus our crusade was born: to preserve these western monuments for future generations, through our photographs, our research, and the recollections of the buildings' former architects, builders and tenants. It has been a labor of love, which the city seems to inspire in all Shanghailanders, both those born here and those for whom the city was only a way-station.
