Keine andere Metropole ist im 20. Jahrhundert so häufig fotografiert worden wie New York. Nach 1945 setzte sich in Bildern von Charles Pratt, Roy DeCarava oder Garry Winogrand eine neue Auffassung von Fotografie durch, die den enormen städtebaulichen Umwälzungen dieser Zeit Rechnung trug. Die Street Photography feierte die Straße als Lebensraum genau in dem Moment, als die Straße selbst ins Visier der Stadtplanung geriet. Bildmagazine wie 'Life' und 'Look' hingegen blendeten diese Tendenzen aus und beförderten die Flucht in die Vorstädte, indem sie ein hochgradig idealisiertes Bild der Suburbanisierung entwarfen. In dieser bildwissenschaftlichen Studie wird erstmalig herausgearbeitet, in welcher Weise sowohl die Street Photography als auch die Magazinfotografie die Stadtentwicklung nicht nur widerspiegelten, sondern das Nachdenken über Stadtgestaltung auch entscheidend prägten.
