: As the DNB records, Staveley is best remembered for The Romish horseleech: or An impartial account of Popery in this nation (London: R.B. for Ralph Smith, 1674; Wing S5346), a polemic against the rise of Catholicism in England following the conversion of James, Duke of York, in 1669 and its aftermath. On his death he left 'some valuable collections for the history and antiquities of Leicester' (DNB) which were edited for inclusion in volume VII of John Nichols' Bibliotheca topographica Britannica (1790; see Upcott pp. 1427-1469), and were later published in Nichols' History and antiquities of the county of Leicester (4 vols, 1795-1811; see Upcott pp. 482-537). The present work was prepared by an anonymous editor from a manuscript left at Staveley's death, and originally published in London in 1712 (ESTC t139970). The work claims with some justification to be 'the First Book in its kind, that has been presented to the Publick' (a1b) in the English language, and was important for describing not only ecclesiastical history, but for discussing at the same time the architecture, building and, especially, the furnishing and decoration of churches. The present second edition has again been through the hands of an anonymous editor who has 'been advised by some judicious friends to add an Appendix to this new edition ... consisting of a large extract from [Francis] Peck's Account of the Architecture of the old English Churches [in his Academia tertia Anglicana; or, The antiquarian annals of Stanford (1727; see Upcott pp. 567-571)], and a list of Saxon Edifices taken from a note in Dr. Ducarel's Anglo-Norman Antiquities' of 1767 (see No. 928). The editor goes on to supply 'some account of the life of Mr. Staveley' (A2-3) extracted from the preface to the 1768 edition of The Romish horseleech, where the biographical data is said to have come from Samuel Carte, who had been personally acquainted with Staveley, and to have been transmitted by Samuel Carte junior (see No. 3114).
