This project series documents alterations and additions to the home of Conrad and Shirley Black in North York, Ontario from 1980-1982. The office identified the project number as 8007. This project consisted of extensive alterations to the interior of the four-floor Black residence, as well as additions on all sides of the exterior facade. This project also included landscaping to the surrounding property. The extended exterior was finished in brick. Alterations and upgrades were made to almost every room in the house. The project is recorded through drawings, photographic materials and textual records dating from 1980-1984. This project series documents the Edifício de Escritórios na Av. D. Afonso Henriques, in Porto, also referred to as Avenida da Ponte I. While the records were held in the office’s archives this project was assigned the number 31/60. In the past the office identified the project as number 121. The office assigned the dates 1968-1974 for this project. The Edifício de Escritórios na Av. D. Afonso Henriques consisted of a building with offices, stores, and parking. Located on a historic site, the intention for the Edifício de Escritórios was to integrate the building into the existing urban landscape. The building was never realized. This project was done in relation to the Arranjo Urbanístico para a Av. D. Afonso Henriques, which was an urban renewal program in Porto. In the 1940s, waves of demolition in the old town created a rupture with the remaining buildings, including the Porto Cathedral. Since the 1950s, there have been several studies and proposals to revitalize this part of the city. Siza’s plan was the first to be accepted by the city council in 1968. Please see project series AP178.S1.1968.PR03, also described in this fonds, for further documentation. Siza also proposed a new design in 2001 for the site across the avenue from this one, known as Avenida da Ponte II. This included a museum, library, stores, parking, and houses. This project related to the building Casa Dos 24 Fernando Távora. The scheme was not realized. Documenting this project series are drawings, photographic materials and textual documentation. Among the drawings are plans, profiles, elevations, sections, cadastral maps and working details. Photographic materials document the model, site and residents of the neighborhood. Description:
The Architectural Projects series, 1945-1986, is the largest series in the fonds and documents the projects worked on by Parkin’s two firms throughout his career. These projects include built work, urban planning, proposals, competitions and feasibility studies. The majority of the projects were based in Toronto and the surrounding area, but projects from across Canada and some international projects in the Caribbean, Middle East, and Northern Africa are also included. These individual projects were identified and separated based on distinct project numbers assigned by the creating offices. The general numbering rule at the offices was two digits to represent the year, followed by two or three digits to represent the consecutive project number for that year (YY###). For instance the 7th project taken on in the year 1980 would be assigned the project number 8007. This chronological ordering has been respected in the arrangement of this series. These projects are recorded primarily through textual records and drawings, but some photographs, paintings, artefacts and one book are also included in this series. The amount of drawings and textual materials for the projects vary greatly. Materials for projects before 1971, from the firm John B. Parkin Associates, are very sparse, sometimes with only a few files or drawings representing a project. Materials after 1971, from the firm Parkin Architects Planners, are much more complete and often contain drawings from initial sketches to finished construction work. Among these drawings are plans, elevations, sections, details, perspectives, and mechanical, electrical and structural drawings. Textual records for these projects typically include correspondence, meeting minutes, specifications, site reports, consultancy files and other construction documentation. The photographic materials in this series often show construction progress and completed work. Also present are presentation panels with mounted drawings, photographs and paintings for some projects. The artefacts typically consist of material samples for construction.
