The competition was organized by the Barcelona City Council and was part of a larger plan to develop new infrastructure for Barcelona, as the Host City for the International Forum of Cultures held in 2004. A number of architects and firms were involved in other projects related to the infrastructure plan, like the South East Coastal Park & Auditoriums by the Foreign Office Architects (See AP171.S1.2000.D6). The park included several other features, like the design of urban furniture (Pep and Xurret benches, and a fence), an artificial mountain, a youth hostel, a small security building and a pier. Only the park, the artificial mountain and the benches were built. The firm arranged work for this project with the following numbers: 133-1, 133-2, 133-6 to 133-8, and 133-10. The CCA did not receive materials classified under numbers 133-9 and 133-11. The recycling plant includes, among other things, office space, an ecomuseum, and a garden. The exhibition presented sixteen life-size architectural interventions, four at each participating center, each produced by a team of architects who explored tectonic issues in a broad sense. The four installations presented at Plaça dels Àngels – the square in front of the MACBA building – explored and modified the surfaces that defined this public space. Vicente Gualla (Barcelona) created an intervention on the façade opposite the Museum, which drew attention to the occupation and the population density that was absent from the buildings in the square. Abalos & Herreros (Madrid) acted upon the façade of the MACBA building itself, cladding and decorating its most monumental elements: the tower and the balcony. Riegler Riewe (Graz) worked with the whole of the square, inscribing a broken horizontal line along the perimeter of the public space. The firm identified this project as number 110. “Fabrications was an innovative exhibition on architecture conceived and produced jointly by MACBA, MoMA, the Wexner Center for the Arts and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The exhibition presented sixteen life-size architectural interventions, four at each participating center, each produced by a team of architects who explored tectonic issues in a broad sense. The four installations presented at Plaça dels Àngels – the square in front of the MACBA building – explored and modified the surfaces that defined this public space. Vicente Gualla (Barcelona) created an intervention on the façade opposite the Museum, which drew attention to the occupation and the population density that was absent from the buildings in the square. Abalos & Herreros (Madrid) acted upon the façade of the MACBA building itself, cladding and decorating its most monumental elements: the tower and the balcony. Riegler Riewe (Graz) worked with the whole of the square, inscribing a broken horizontal line along the perimeter of the public space. The project series documents the design of the “Green House” for Mariano Maqueda and Olga Montón, in Pozuelo de Alarcón, in the Community of Madrid, Spain. The firm identified this project as number 103. “The project is located in a typical bit of middle-class suburbia, in which low-density housing, wasteland, amenities and clumps of pine trees intermingle, giving form to the idea of an urban existence that is in contact with nature. [Abalos & Herreros] decided to be extremely direct and to stress this aspiration by using gardening techniques. In fact, the house as a whole can be understood as an example of a giant ars-topiaria, an idea that is not at odds with the fact that it will be lived in by a landscape architect. The sloping topography is taken advantage of to build a house that has continuity with the natural environment, avoiding differentiation between the house and the terrain: the whole house is garden and the whole garden is house.
