Description:
This project file documents an unbuilt design by Testa & Weiser for Carbon Tower (2001), a forty-storey building made almost entirely of carbon fibre. The project was developed in parallel with scripting software designed while Peter Testa and Devyn Weiser co-directed the Emergent Design Group at MIT. "The tower consists of an interdependent set of parts: floor plates hang from a diagrid structure of bundled fibres reinforced by two double-helix covered ramps, which are run in and out of the structure and are themselves made of strands woven at a finer scale. A thin composite skin—glass would be too heavy—wraps the tower’s parts together. A collaboration with Arup in 2002 allowed Testa & Weiser to simplify the scheme even further, by moving all core elements, from elevators to structural supports, to the tower’s perimeter. To take full advantage of the flexibility and energy efficiency of composite materials, Testa & Weiser also imagined that the carbon fibre structures would be formed on site through a process called pultrusion."[1] The file contains a large number of digital files documenting the conceptual and design development of the project; consultation with Arup Consulting Engineers, New York; research on composite materials; fabrication of 3D printed physical models by 3D Systems and Windform; and exhibition of the project at several museums and galleries, including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles and the Cooper-Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, New York. Also contained in the file are 56 paper drawings (including some sketches done on top of printed computer-aided designs) and two 3D printed physical models produced by 3D Systems. Description:
Series 1, Objectile, 1993 - 2011, relates to the firm’s activities, from the production of decorative panels to the management of daily business. This series includes born-digital material and chiefly dates from 2004-2008. “Objectile” is a term first proposed by philosopher Gilles Deleuze in his book The Fold, published in 1988. It was used to name the research conducted by Bernard Cache and his associate Patrick Beaucé around the development of industrial means to produce “non-standard” objects. In his book Earth Moves (Terre Meuble), Bernard Cache describes non-standard objects as repeatable variations on a theme, such as a family of curves declining the same mathematical model. The randomness of their patterns recalls earth’s forms and curves, the way geography generates nature’s topography. Cache also wanted these folds and curves to express a relationship between the exterior (geography) and the interior (furniture) of architecture. From these ideas, the firm Objectile was founded created to industrially produce and market those non-standard objects mostly taking the form of decorative panels. Those panels and other furniture were among the first objects to be computationally designed with computer-aided design software (CAD) and then industrially built through computer numerical control (CNC). The patterns were designed through unique algorithms that could endlessly be modified and personalized. Materials in this series reflect the work of Objectile. This includes design and execution records for the different wooden panels and other furniture, which are primarily in still image and CAD formats (TopSolid, AutoCAD). There is also a significant body of material for the Objectile website (in HTML and XML formats). The series additionally includes textual documentation reflecting the administration of the firm, including accounting and legal documentation, as well as correspondence. These materials are in typical office formats and include email.

The Professional papers series, circa 1950-2008, records the professional activities of Aditya Prakash throughout his career up until his death in 2008. His work in architecture, art, photography, academia and theatre are documented through textual records, drawings, photographic materials, ephemera, books, serials and sound recordings. The earliest materials in this series show Prakash’s interest in architectural photography early in his career through photographs, slides, and negatives taken by him. These materials, dating from before 1970, show most prominently his projects, people, villages and cityscapes. Materials dating from after 1968 show Prakash’s move into academia and his solo architectural career. During this time, the records document Prakash’s research interests on subjects such as urbanization, Chandigarh, the Modular and the environment, through drawings, newspaper articles, government and committee reports, correspondence and presentation materials. Likewise, his teaching is recorded through overhead transparencies, drawings and notes. The series also shows Prakash’s involvement in the professional community, including event photographs, correspondence and records documenting conferences, events and his discussion group Our Get Togethers. Correspondence with architect Charles Correa and frequent letters between Prakash and writer Mulk Raj Anand are of note here. Apart from his architectural career, Prakash’s work as a modern artist is well recorded through drawings, sketchbooks, and photographic reproductions of his art, mostly dating from after 1980. His interest in art as well as his community involvement are documented through exhibition ephemera, correspondence, and exhibition reviews and writings on his artwork. His role as the president of the Lalit Kala Akademi is also documented through publications, event photographs and correspondence. Finally, Prakash’s involvement in theatre, specifically with his amateur theatre troop Abhinet, is captured through scripts, photographs of performances and play reviews.
