Projet
AP164.S1.1999.D10
Description:
The project series documents the competition entry for the mixed-use tower “El Mirador” in the Bay of Algeciras. The firm was invited to submit their design proposal which won second prize. The competition was organised by the Algeciras City Council. The firm identified this project as number 123. “The project attempts to express, with an architectural gesture, the beauty of the geography of Algeciras: the bay, the port, the Rock and the Straits of Gibraltar, the proximity of Ceuta and Africa, the cork-oak forests that surround the town. For this [Abalos & Herreros] propose a building that, from a single body, opens out into two towers from one great public viewing platform. This form has strategic holes giving onto the more notable topographical features, establishing a physical relationship with them, while the section is organized as a gradient of privacy that increases with height. The competition […] proposed a mixed programme in a posture parallel to the great avenue of the harbour of Algeciras. An evanescent building apparently fragile appears to let one being stimulated by the effects of the climate and the atmospheric phenomenons with an appearance changing with the function of the hours of the day or the season. Its layered section attends ascending to the different landscapes of the city: first public space, second the cities skyline and at last the 360° horizon rising above the city.” (ARCH270975) Abalos & Herreros worked with Ángel Jaramillo, Renata Sentkiewicz, Jakob Hense. Documenting this project are conceptual, design development and presentation drawings, cartographic and graphic materials, and competition records.

Description:
This project series documents the planning or reorganisation of the central sector of Abandoibarra, in Bilbao. The firm identified this project as number 83. At the time, the development of this area was essential for the development of the city. The firm described their project as: “[...] The centre of attention would be transferred from the material to the space between the things, working with the void: making a project of air, converting the dimensional [sic], the distance between the things, the public space (ARCH270975)." The project was developed by the Abalos & Herreros with César Azcárate and Patxi Mangado. They also worked with Eva Gómez, Juan Lahuerta, David Torres and Carlos Urtailquil. In 1993, the project won first prize at the competition Ordenación Abando-Ibarra, an open national competition organised by the Ayuntamiento de Bilbao (Bilbao City Council) and Colegio de Arquitectos del País Vasco y Navarra. This qualified the project for the international level of the competetion. However the project was not selected for the final round. Documenting the project are conceptual and design development drawings, and photographic materials.

Description:
The project series documents the design of the “Green House” for Mariano Maqueda and Olga Montón, in Pozuelo de Alarcón, in the Community of Madrid, Spain. The firm identified this project as number 103. “The project is located in a typical bit of middle-class suburbia, in which low-density housing, wasteland, amenities and clumps of pine trees intermingle, giving form to the idea of an urban existence that is in contact with nature. [Abalos & Herreros] decided to be extremely direct and to stress this aspiration by using gardening techniques. In fact, the house as a whole can be understood as an example of a giant ars-topiaria, an idea that is not at odds with the fact that it will be lived in by a landscape architect. The sloping topography is taken advantage of to build a house that has continuity with the natural environment, avoiding differentiation between the house and the terrain: the whole house is garden and the whole garden is house. The project is, then, a topological mechanism for arranging and modeling the land so as to increase and to obtain maximum enjoyment from the landscape’s weaker stimuli: the pine trees, the near-by stream, the setting of the sun over the skyline of Madrid from the house’s highest point… Natural views and artificial views: a green machine.” (ARCH270971) Documenting the project are conceptual, design development and working drawings, forms, invoices and contracts.

The project site was located between the streets Ferran Junoy, Tucuman and Borredà, nearby the shopping center La Maquinista. The firm identified this project as number 152. Records document first and second iterations of the design for the tower, primarily differentiated by the base of the building. The first design includes a rectangular base. The firm identified this iteration of the project as number 152-1. The second design of the tower includes a triangular base for the building. The firm identified this iteration as number 152-2. Documenting the project are conceptual, design development, presentation and working drawings, cartographic, digital and reference materials, project descriptions, correspondence, proposals, budgets, notes, agendas, contracts, invoices, trade catalogues, and paper models.
