The confluence of their respective pedagogies is evident in albums DR1974:0002:012:001-049 and DR1974:0002:013:001-008 where Durand's` "rationalized" methodology of design is applied to Leroy's vocabulary of antiquity(1). Hubert's two albums of student drawings for the École des Beaux-Arts (DR1974:0002:012:001-049 and DR1974:0002:013:001-008) are complimentary. The former contains competition drawings and programmes for the monthly competitions (Concours d'emulation) as well as drawing, prints, and programmes for the 1800 (2e), 1801, and 1802 (1er) Grand Prix competitions, each of which trace the entire process from "Concours d'essai" and "esquisse", up to and including, studies for final renderings. The latter album contains large-scale final renderings for the 1800, 1801, and possibly the 1798 Grand prix competitions. As in Durand's "mecanisme de la composition", Hubert proceeds from the simple to the complex, often utilizing the graph paper or hand drawn grid particular to Durand's design methodology (codified in his book 'Precis des Lecons' 1802). This process is readily apparent in both Hubert's "Concours d'emulation" drawings, and, more completely, in the drawings for the Grand Prix competitions. The studies for Hubert's winning 1802 Grand Prix entry for a'Foire' indicate that he isolated and studied different building types before combining them into the unified complex evident in his final renderings. Initially the brief also called for the erection of five pre-fabricated Wimpy kiosks, of which at least one and possibly two kiosks were erected. The restaurant building is a square, clear-span, steel-frame building with its own kitchen and store rooms, and includes a cafeteria, a full service restaurant and bar, and offices. The restaurant dining room can be converted from one large space into two by means of a curtain on a track, removable barrier rails, and mobile cash and cutlery units. The exterior is timber-clad with tinted glazing. Existing conditions drawings show the existing site layout, landscaping plans and plans showing water supply and electrical services. Design development drawings and working drawings include preliminary interior perspectives, site plans, floor plans, reflected ceiling plans, utility plans, sections, elevations, axonometric views of interior, roof trusses, and structural system, construction details, and progress charts. Two sets of drawings that include plans, sections, and elevations, were possibly used for presentation purposes. Construction details are drawn on letter-size paper and show details for curtain tracks, exterior walls, and windows. A project schedule listing the remaining work is dated October 29, 1973. Consultant's drawings for catering, structural, mechanical, and electrical services are also included in the file. Over 300 detail drawings on letter-size paper are included in the textual records. This project series documents the design and construction of a library and an addition to city hall in Fredericton, New Brunswick from 1972-1975. The office identified the project number as 7226. This project consisted of two distinct parts; a public library constructed at the corners of Campbell and Carleton Streets, and an addition to city hall whose original building was constructed at the corners of Queen and York Streets around 1875. These two buildings were located two blocks from one another, but a master plan for the project shows that the separating streets would be removed in favour of a pedestrian friendly landscape. Both buildings were located next to the St. John River. For this project, Parkin Architects Planners partnered with architectural firm Graham Napier Associates to form the joint venture referred to as Graham Parkin Architects Engineers Planners. The brick-clad addition to city hall nearly doubled the square footage of the ground and first floors. The original city hall was four levels and the addition was two, with a mechanical penthouse on top. The new areas included departmental offices such as planning, engineering and sewage, a drafting room, conference room, and reception, among others. The library consisted of a two-storey, brick-clad building that was approximately 24,000 square feet in size with a 16 car parking lot. The ground floor included reception and exhibit areas, stacks, administration offices, bookmobiles, and staff lockers, while the second level had stacks and reading areas, audiovisual areas and a staff work room and break room. The library also had a mechanical penthouse on top. The project is recorded through drawings, including mounted presentation boards, photographic materials and textual records dating from 1972-1978. The drawings consist of original sketches, plans, sections, elevations and details of both city hall and the library, and some drawings used for construction. There are also drawings of the original city hall, first drafted around 1875. The photographs show existing buildings and the construction progress of the project. The textual records consist of correspondence, conference reports, interoffice letters, specifications, consultancy documentation, a soil investigation, research and drawing transmittal records. This project series documents the design and construction of a library and an addition to city hall in Fredericton, New Brunswick from 1972-1975. The office identified the project number as 7226. This project consisted of two distinct parts; a public library constructed at the corners of Campbell and Carleton Streets, and an addition to city hall whose original building was constructed at the corners of Queen and York Streets around 1875. These two buildings were located two blocks from one another, but a master plan for the project shows that the separating streets would be removed in favour of a pedestrian friendly landscape. Both buildings were located next to the St. John River. For this project, Parkin Architects Planners partnered with architectural firm Graham Napier Associates to form the joint venture referred to as Graham Parkin Architects Engineers Planners.
